In addition to drop-in time, we also have participatory programs for teens at the BTC. These programs are directly fueled by the interests and ideas that our teens express– if you are a teen who wants to share some ideas, please share them by taking our Interest Survey. Here at the BTC, we like to approach programming with the idea that anything is possible, so we encourage everyone to contribute their ideas, no matter how outlandish it may seem!

Here are some of our regular programs:

Late Nite Friday

On Fridays, the Basement is open until 10pm, and we cook up tasty dinner with and for youths! It is still a drop-in space, so who knows what could be going on? Movies? Ping Pong? Maybe even a food fight!

Dungeons and Dragons

Our first Dungeons and Dragons meeting will be November 15, 2018– stay tuned for information about regular game days!

PREP

PREP stands for Personal Responsibility Education Program. It is a fun, informative class on sex education and healthy relationships that the BTC holds about four times a year! It is taught by the BTC Director and the BTC Americorps Member who follow the “Making Proud Choices!” curriculum. Teens who finish the course, which is eight 1.5 hour sessions over four weeks, receive $100 and a boatload of knowledge. Because we are limited to about 10 spots per class, teens must sign up for PREP by turning in their signed permission slips before the class begins. The BTC is not open during PREP classes to ensure that PREP discussions are safe and remain confidential. Please contact us if you would like to be on the contact list for information about future PREP classes!

Teen Council

Teen Council has been missing for a bit, but we are in the process of reviving this program so that teens who are interested in leadership positions at the BTC have the opportunity to shape our programming and our direction as an organization.

  1. I saw your announcement re PREP course starting Sept 6 re dating and sex. Is this course associated with Planned Parenthood? Thanks.

    1. Hi there,
This class is not affiliated with Planned Parenthood, though as one of the few assignments we do ask teens to call a clinic that offers reproductive health services to find out basic information from them such as hours they are open and services they offer. This is so they have that knowledge ahead of time in case they do need to access those services later. Planned Parenthood is often the easiest clinic to call and is the most local, however there are other options available. Thanks for your interest and please let me know if there is any other way I can be helpful!

  2. Hello,

I am a 25 year old musician in the Montpelier area. Is your program looking for any more mentors/musicians to help with the Music Mentors program?

    Best wishes.

    1. Hi Craig!

This is exciting! Full disclosure, the Music Mentors program has been long dead. There has been some interesting staff turnover at the Basement, but I am the newly arrived Americorps member and I am angling to get something like the old Music Mentor program breathing life again!

I’m a musician too, and I think it’d be really cool. I am also re-vamping the website! If you’d be interested in talking more about doing some kind of music program at the Basement, you can reach me at rwilcox@wcysb.org.

      Thanks Craig!
