Programs

In addition to drop-in time at the BTC, we have different programs going on every day! These programs are directly fueled by the ideas shared by teens at our monthly Teen Council. Here at the BTC, we like to approach programming with the idea that anything is possible, so we encourage everyone to contribute their ideas, no matter how outlandish it may seem!

Here are our regular monthly/weekly activities as well as some of the activities we’ve been up to lately.

Late Nite Friday

On Fridays, the Basement is open until 10pm, and we cook up tasty dinner with and for youths! It is still a drop-in space, so who knows what could be going on? Movies? Ping Pong? Maybe even a food fight!

Zine Machine

Zine Machine is a semi-regular activity where anyone who wants to can make a zine about anything they want. What a zine, you may ask. A zine is a little book, easy to make, easy to reproduce, and completely up to you. The ability to self-publish promotes confidence and creation.

ALLEY MASTERS!

ALLEY MASTERS! is not just a Wii bowling league, it’s an experience.

Teen Council

Teen council is one of the most important programs we have at the BTC. It happens once a month, and is the only time we ever ask everyone to stop what they’re doing, and gather around for pizza and a discussion. We talk about how the previous month went, and what programming everyone would like to see in the next month – these ideas get put directly into the following month’s calendar. We also use that opportunity to make any announcements, and discuss the role of the teen center in the community.

  1. I saw your announcement re PREP course starting Sept 6 re dating and sex. Is this course associated with Planned Parenthood? Thanks.

    • Hi there,
This class is not affiliated with Planned Parenthood, though as one of the few assignments we do ask teens to call a clinic that offers reproductive health services to find out basic information from them such as hours they are open and services they offer. This is so they have that knowledge ahead of time in case they do need to access those services later. Planned Parenthood is often the easiest clinic to call and is the most local, however there are other options available. Thanks for your interest and please let me know if there is any other way I can be helpful!

  2. Hello,

I am a 25 year old musician in the Montpelier area. Is your program looking for any more mentors/musicians to help with the Music Mentors program?

    Best wishes.

    • Hi Craig!

This is exciting! Full disclosure, the Music Mentors program has been long dead. There has been some interesting staff turnover at the Basement, but I am the newly arrived Americorps member and I am angling to get something like the old Music Mentor program breathing life again!

I’m a musician too, and I think it’d be really cool. I am also re-vamping the website! If you’d be interested in talking more about doing some kind of music program at the Basement, you can reach me at rwilcox@wcysb.org.

      Thanks Craig!
